For fans of The Kurtherian Gambit series and world. This is set between books 13 and 14 in The Kurtherian Gambit and explains how Ashur's mate Bellatrix comes to be in the group.
Chapter 01
After another fight with her boyfriend, Ciprian, Yelena comes back home to Mama (who always bakes when she worries), And her twin brother Alec (Tall, mentally tuned to her.).Mama tells Alec that Yelena came back, with nothing with her, still on her work clothes, not even a coat with her, like she just walked out of the house, bought a ticket, and came home. And that was, indeed what she had done. She had caught Ciprian with the neighbor again, she hated her job, and she acted – broken. She never wanted to tell anyone when she was hurting. But this time she couldn’t pretend, and she crumpled into Alec’s arms when he came into her bedroom. Alec convinces her to stay the week-end, and to come and see the new litter of pups their local breeder, Dmitri had. Yelena decided she’d like to do that, so she and Alec went over, and renewed their friendship. Inger, one of the bitches, had delivered, and they all looked like little black bear cubs. They came to her, especially the smallest one – the runt – who seemed to be fierce, trying to bark and ending up in a yawn. Yelena named her Bellatrix – “lady warrior and bringer of light”. Yelena felt contentment from her, as she snuggled into her, and a scene formed in Yelena’s mind, of Bellatrix as large as a small pony, and it had all of the other puppies cringing and rolling onto their backs in front of her. Yelena decided to stay home for a week, and help Dmitri train the litter.
Chapter 02
Yelena had the best time of her life she had ever felt, during that week. The puppies learned new things every day, and Bellatrix was absolutely determined that nothing would slow her down. She explored on her own, absolutely fearless. Ciprian called her, reminding her of the advantages of the big city, of her career, of earning money that she could never make at home, but she had changed. She really didn’t miss any of it. She enjoyed jeans and a warm shirt, her hair in a pony tail, no make-up, and now she also realized that Ciprian wasn’t much of a catch, either. And she told him that. Don’t call her, and don’t move on, as no one should have to put up with his shit. Good-bye! And the thought of not talking to him again made her happy! Dmitri came out and offered to let her take Bellatrix home that night, and to keep her, as he wouldn’t be able to sell her, anyway. And Yelena was happy. Her Mom maybe not so much, but she’d be getting her own place soon, and would want Bellatrix with her. MIles away, in the city, Ciprian was angry. No one ever left HIM! And he knew she had meant it. Then he turned, and went to the station. LIKE HELL SHE WAS GOING TO LEAVE HIM ! !
Chapter 03
Yelena was working with Bellatrix, trying to teach her to jump up on and climb over a pile of books. Aas she worked more with the puppy, the images she saw in her mind were getting clearer, and she knew the little fuzz-ball was communicating with her. In her mind she saw that Bellatrix considered herself the size of a mouse, and the books the size of a mountain range. The doorbell rang, and she got up and went to the door, opened it, and- Ciprian? Standing, tight-lipped, in his elegant wool coat, scarf, suit, black leather shoes. She wanted to slam the door in his face and lock it. He demanded she go back with him. She refused. He insisted, she again refused. She stated that she WAS at home, and that she was not going back. He tried to kiss her, and she felt a physical revulsion. She wiped the back of her hand across her mouth, wanting to spit out the taste of him. She told him to G O ! ! Yelena, softly – we’re going home -! No! We’re done! And he hit her. She launched herself at his knees, taking him down. He was raging.she ran outside, and he caught her by her hair. He hit her again, then, Get. Up. Bellatrix, working with the books, heard a scream and felt Yelena’s pain. was hurt! Bellatrix ran out, and attacked Ciprian ‘s ankle. When he kicjed her in the belly, and she yipped, Yelena got MAD! And punched him hard, in the nose. Blood spattered and covered him, and he collapsed. An asshole that had hurt her dog! She picked her up, and Bellatrix licked her face! Blood on her teeth! Blood breath! And Bellatrix laughed. Alec appeared, askin what had happened, and Yelena told him. He tried to get me to come back, but we got him, didn’t we, ‘Trix? Ciprian tried once more – “You can’t do better than me !” And Yelena decided that Trix was going to learn to jump, and that she was going to learn how to box! And she did!@
Chapter 04
Two years later. FKS 03/4 Two years later- Emilian, a Wechselbalg, heard Cezar whining, and hated him. He stank with fear, and was cruel. He enjoyed hurting people. Emilian would have to get rid of him as he knew too much to live, and too many of the girls were injured when delivered. Emilian was anticipating expanding the business now that Michael was gone, and Stephen and Bethany Anne appeared too weak to control things. It was time for the Wechselbalg to take their rightful place in the European underworld. Theodor Dimitru has trying to buy out a competitor, Lonescu Corp.. Virgil, another business rival, was also after the company, and had threatened Theodor with bodily harm (ripped to shreds) if he didn’t desist. Theodor didn’t really believe that Virgil would take out a hit on him over a business matter!That was why had had come skiing. The mountains would put things back into perspective, and he would come home refreshed and sharp. Then he saw a man following him down the ski path, gaining. Would Virgil really do it? Theodor went faster, trying to escape, and, as he came around a turn, hit a branch laying in his path. Theodor tried to avoid it, and his ankle snapped as he twisted, tumbling down the hill, deep into the trees. He saw his follower hit the branch, tumbling as well, the saw a black wolf and a human come out of the trees and drag him away. The snow patrol came by, but missed seeing Theo- in the trees, unconscious, so just pulled the branch out of the way and kept on. Alec, coming down the same slope, saw the man in front of him fall, disappear, then Alec saw the branch and also tumbled hitting his head. He did not see the two who came to drag his body away. Emilian had changed, and Cezar and Marcel had helped him drag Alec’s body away. Cezar kept insisting that he had heard a scream before Alec had fallen, but Emilian didn’t believe him, and never looked. Just killed Cezar quickly.
Chapter 05
As Yelena was practicing her boxing in the gym that afternoon, she felt Alec, in pain, as if she were there wirg him/. Cold air, snow, hands pull him up, hit him. Boris, the gym boss, knew immediately something was wrong, and came over. She made an excuse, and left. She was beginning to actually hear words in her head from Bellatrix, as if she were talking to her, but had discounted them. Too impossible! Bellatrix told her that they would find him ! ! Bethany Anne upset because European underworld still not behaving, and that she would have to kill them all! Besides, she’s bored, and looking for something to do. Stephen had been handling Romania, but Bethany Anne was letting him and Jennifer have some time off, and she would be handling it in Europe for awhile. Gabrielle told her to be careful with the weak ones (Stephen had taken out the Alphas and the Betas already, so weak ones will be unfair, hit weakness. Bethany Anne would take six with her. Yelana tells Momma that Alec in trouble, and that she was going to find him. Mom upset, call the authorities. There are “things” out there you don’t know about. Our family came from there, and we are “changers”. Wolves. Wecselbalg. Alec and you both have it in you. Our family had to leave. We were driven out of the pack- it isn’t safe there. “You’re talking crazy, Mama” “You can hear her talk, and you answer her. All of the dogs listen to you. They accept you as their alpha. “ If you go, I’m afraid you will never come back.” “I have to go and find Alec. I’ll be fine!” No time to waste- Alec was in danger.
Chapter 06
Theodor was in and out of consciousness, ankle was aching, had cracked some ribs. Try to get on trail or go to hotel, through woods? He had seen a wolf, and he knew they had the wrong man. They had meant to go after him, but had taken the other! As he struggled along, he noticed black pods dropping down from the sky. Bethany Anne, John, Eric, Peter, Ecaterina, Ashur descended from the Pods, went toward the resort.
Emilian questioned Alec, thinking it was Theodor. Alec denied knowing any Virgil, and Emilian didn’t believe him. Yelena goes to resort, asks Petra at desk about Alec. Was told he and another person had gone onto the slopes earlier, and neither had been seen since. Suddenly pain hit her, so hard and swiftly that she vomited with it. She heard Bellatrix outside, and told her to stay out. Didn’t want her hurt, as no one would understand. Ecaterina came to her, worried. “Call me if you need help.” Yelena HAD to find Alec! Bethany Anne identified her as a Wechselbalg, and that she might be in trouble later on. The real thing – not a plant. Distant ancestor, and she didn’t know it. Bethany Anne looked out the window, saw Ashur nose to nose with another, large black German Shepherd. Bethany anne looks into Bellatrix’ mind, sees Yelena as a good person, looking for her brother, so Bethany Anne will go out later, see if she can find him before Yelena has to.
Chapter 07
Peter and Ecaterina, outside, looking at sky, forest, Ecaterina reminiscing about how she used to walk the mountains, forests, needing to be away from humans and their concerns. Valuable to both Bethany Anne and to the rest of them, as she keeps Nathan in a good mood, as a few of them would be dead by now without her there. Saw Yelena go out to look for Alec. Yelena thinks she’s crazy, because she thinks that they smell trustworthy. They speak to her, mention Wechselbalg, Peter changes in front of her, tells her she has some wolf blood, too, and to come and talk to Bethany Anne. She does. Emilian realizes, after talking to Virgil, that they may indeed have the wrong man, and that this one they had must die quickly, before he could tell of what he had seen.
Chapter 08
Bethany Anne tells Yelena that they were there to help people, and to eliminate some of the bad ones, and not there just to help her. Yelena felt better about them going out to fight, then, but insisted on going, too, as she was not afraid, that he was her brother, and she would protect him as long as she was able to do so. They promised they would save Alec. Yelena noticed their swords and pistols, and wondered who they were! At the house, Emilian verifies that it is indeed Alec they have, and sent Marcel out to find Theodor. Emilian stayed to torture Alec, as it was a bad day for everyone. Marcel went out to do as told, because he didn’t want to die.
Chapter 09
Jamie Constantin, guard, patrolled outside the house. Heard the torture, screams, decided he didn’t want to be there any more, and ran. Met Bethany Anne and the group on the trail, told them the truth, BA let him live because of the baby. Jamie ran, glad to be alive. As the group approach the house Yelena feels Alec’s pain, and whimpered every time. She was going to get revenge! Bethany Anne and the group went in. Bethany Anne knows Alec is upstairs – saw it in Jamie’s mind. Yelena told “Trix that they had to help him, steadying herself with that. Yelena came into the room, saw Bethany Anne holding a man by his neck, saw Alec in the corner, went to him. He was still alive. Bethany Anne continued beating Emilian, and he felt like she needed to be taught a lesson, so he picked up a gun and tried to shoot Yelena, but Bellatrix understood his intent, and jumped in front of her, taking the bullet, love of one pack-mate for another. Bethany Anne ordered Eric to carry Bellatrix to the Pod, so they could save her. Eric did so, Yelena following, Alec and the rest in the room, Alec telling them about another skier on the slopes who might die. Bethany Anne, in vamp mode, with Peter in wolf form, went into forest, found Marcel, found him guilty, killed him, wishing that he “Enjoy Hell!” Bethany Anne found Theo, carried him in (telling him that he had seen no wolves, just delerium, saved him. Three days later, on the G’laxix Sphaea, Yelena awakens, feeling much better. All healed. Bellatrix fine, in snow, playing. Yelena and Alec upgraded. Will talk wit Bethany Anne.
Chapter 10
Virgil Baciu had heard nothing about Theo, so thought that he was probably dead, and that his wife, Mariana, might even come to love him, with time. But first, he would take everything else Theo had valued, starting with the company. But Theo walked into the room, looking healthier than ever. The Police came in, taking Virgil away, and Theo now started negotiations to buy Virgil’s company. Bethany Anne invites Yelena and Alec to come into space, to see the ship and the rest of the crew. Bellatrix can come too, and Yelena is, indeed, getting images and speech from her. Not crazy. And Ashur and Bellatrix are sweet on each other! Might have puppies soon. Yelena accepts, Alec goes home to be the responsible twin. Won’t tell Mom where Yelena is.
Chapter 11
Bobcat and William practicing/testing out a new drone mechanism, with a new stabilizer in it, for Bethany Anne. Bobcat suddenly speechless, William going over to a young woman in the doorway. I’m Yelena , just exploring- Explained that she had come up with Bethany Anne, Ecaterina and everybody, and with Bellatrix. John said she could look around. She would be aboard for a little while, as they wanted to do some tests on her and Bellatrix. And she was smiling – at Him! Bobcat! He offered to give her a tour of the ship, she accepted. William called Bethany Anne to collect his bet. Bethany Anne had bet that Bobcat would try the beer first, and had lost three ounces of gold to William. Bobcat took her to All Guns Blazing, offered her beer to taste. She chose to learn how to brew beer in the back, rather than take the rest of the ship’s tour. Bethany Anne, William and Nathan had watched them, had incredulously surmised that Bobcat had found a woman he could love even more than beer, and that if they ever had babies, they would be born holding steins. Bellatrix laughed.
Miscellaneous Characters:
Ciprian, Telena's ex, one who went after her, beat her, hurt Bellatrix when pup tried to protect Yelena.
Dmitri, Dog breeder, for whom Yelena had worked in her teen years. Went back to work for him after came home. Dmitri gave her Bellatrix, the runt, as her own.
