Family History: Has regained a sense of purpose in hunting raiders. Has been six months since the last time, Member, Heroes Brigade. Married to Justen, two years older. Never .again would she stay silent when the innocent were abused. She would give her last breath to see the blood of heartless men spill out upon the ground.Anger. Rage. That’s what drove her.

Payetta’s own parents were not the righteous sort, especially her father. His love of affairs and drink and beatings created a horrific home. His mouth breathed out a litany of constant threats and colorful words. But he never turned his bitterness against Payetta. It was only her mother that received his ugly words and, occasionally, his powerful fists. The only reason he hated mother was because she was deaf, and therefore, when she tried to speak the words didn’t come out neatly. He hated this with a fury, so most of the time her mother shut her mouth. And since she was deaf, she couldn’t attend to his desires when he voiced them. Many things had to be acted out with hand motions. He hated this too. She wished she would have spoken up for her mother, but she had succumbed to an underlying fear of her father mixed with a desire for his praise. Her silence in her mother’s defense was a regret she would take to her grave, One thing Payetta resolved to do was never shut her mouth when words needed to come out. She would speak.

Payetta's Secret Payetta’s magic was the true source of their strength and success in the Heeroes Brigade, and in all other things. Only the Heroes Brigade knew of it, and they all swore to keep it secret. Many in the Meadowlands associated magic with evil, and for good reason. All the mages they knew were murderers, except for Payetta. But then, they only believed she was a brash and quarrelsome young woman who lived in the woods. And she was that. But she was a mage too, and a deadly one.

Healing was a magic she’d gained through slow, steady use. It was not something she could practice every day. The power of it was given life out of necessity, as was all her magic.

She didn’t remember how old she was when it all started, but it was very early. Three or four she guessed. The house would rumble with the violent words of her father and he would tear apart her silent mother with threats and vulgarities no child should ever have to hear from the mouth of a parent.

Once she ran far enough away from the echoing walls of her house, the quiet of nature became her refuge. She remembered talking every day to the animals she saw as if they were friends. Eventually, they began to respond to her. It was as if they heard her voice even when it was only the voice in her head. She began to beckon them to come closer.

And eventually, they came. First the smaller animals. The field mice, moles, chipmunks, rats, shrews. Next were the large black rats and gophers. Soon came squirrels and hares. By the time she was ten, she had made acquaintance with every type of bird in the woods and most of the local herds of deer and elk. And by that time, she knew her talent was something to be kept secret. She dared not find out how others would react and feared they might believe her to be an evil mage as was often talked about in the community square.

Eight years later, her understanding of her own healing power was still partially a mystery, but she knew this—the more pain she felt inside, and the more anger that vibrated in the core of her being, the more powerful and effective became her magic.
