(Betting and payback)
Throughout the Gambit, there is consistent betting on outcomes, on odds of things happening, on people reacting in a certain way, or within a certain time. Adam won all of the money he needed to pay for the construction of Eve by winning bets from Team BMW, Guards, or whomever would bet with him. Team BMW was consistently betting against one another about everything. The Guards were always trying to "get one up" on Bethany Anne- to humorously catch her short, or ???, and she was always trying to do the same to them. Peter bet with the other teams on the timing of the wins and/or losses in the battle with the Yollins, and payed back in 15/25. Every book has multiple examples of bets, paybacks, and St. Payback is a Bitch! (Getting even!) This is only one of the many consistent themes, in great part, that makes this whole Gambit so believable - the humanity expressed by all of the characters in their interactions with each other.
Bethany Anne had a favorite saying, when she was on the winning side, one which all of the Guards and Team members adopted and used whenever it was appropriate -
"Saint PayBack is a Bitch ! "
