Woody had a bushy red beard, a scar on his left cheek to his temple, cold blue eyes, was quite large, and armed with wood axes and other weapons. His crew consisted of both men and women, the women armed with small hatchets  and bows and arrows. Woody had a firm, unwavering handshake which Astrid trusted. Woody and his crew prefer to be called survivors rather than bandits, as that was what they were forced to do by the Protectorate. Woody et al become staunch supporters of Astrid and her people, and even eventually think about settling down again, themselves, into a village life when all of the fighting is done.

Woody's group was mainly of dispossessed villagers, who had been forcibly removed from their village when they either could not or refused to pay the tribute tax set upon them by the Lungu Protectorate, and collected (along with extra amounts), but the Assessors of the Protectorate. They had been forced into the forests to survive, those who had not been taken in by other villages, and were in general despised by all villagers. Woody had come from a village named Napul, which had been dissolved by the Assessors some years back.
