When Bethany Anne abdicated as Empress, Queen, (or whatever) of the Etheric Empire, Lance Reynolds was left as adviser, quasi-leader of the new budding Federation. As can be imagined, there was lots to learn, by everyone. As Reynolds had more of a diplomatic role, he was in need of entities which could help with the compliance with regulations/rulings devised by the Federation. Nathan Lowell had therefore formed an organization, called The Bad Company, which could be recommended by Reynolds as an organization to help with those matters. The goal of The Bad Company was to increase the influence and security of the Federation throughout all systems, and each client the Company helped presented an opportunity to do just that. Bad Company's head office was in an obscure corner of the Pan Galaxy.

The story line of this first book involves a dispute between two species on separate planets - the Tissikinnons on Tissikinnon Four, and the Crenellians, from another system. The Crenellians had signed a treaty with the "Tiskers" to allow mining on T Four, in exchange for weaponry and a planetary defensive system. When Tiskers killed the entire company of miners, it was brought to Federation notice, and Bad Company sent in their Direct Action Branch, a subsidiary owned totally by Bad Company, to investigate and settle the ongoing fighting and dispute. This was done to the satisfaction of all by the end of the story (the Crenellians had signed a treaty with a different set of Tiskers, so the ones who had killed the miners thought that they were trespassers. New treaty, new agreement, satisfied all). However, the most interesting part of the whole volume was the development of the characters involved, and their potential for further involvement in Bad Company's activities in future volumes, so that is the main content of the listings in this volume of the series Bad Company.

The list is given below, and each name mentioned will have an entry in the Character group (or another group mentioned) with references.
