Bethany Anne awarded him his own military group, to help with his activities. Was done before she left to retrieve Michael. Brought back TH and Char to head it for him
"The Bad Company is built to acquire intelligence for the Federation and works to promote the Federation’s creed. If you accept the appointment I’m offering, you will be honor-bound to Empress Bethany Anne. You will fight for your brothers and sisters in the company. We run a lean operation to make sure that our profits, because we sell services and products, is self-sustaining. We handle intersystem exports and imports, along with military realignment. You would be in charge of the military branch.” The Bad Company’s mission is to evaluate, approve, and execute paid missions in support of the Etheric Federation.
One. the mission must pass the smell test, subjectively approved by at least two executive members of The Company. Two. Approved missions will be executed with the appropriate level of violence as determined by the on-site commander. Three. The price must be right. I’ll have someone meet you when you reach Onyx Station. They’ll have the RFIs for you--the requests for interdiction.” Nathan accepts for himself, for Char, and for the FDG.
TH accepts the roll of head of the Direct Action Branch (military actions) of Bad company.

When Bethany Anne abdicated as Empress, Queen, or whatever of the Etheric Empire, Lance Reynolds was left as adviser, quasi-leader of the new budding Federation. As can be imagined, there was lots to learn, by everyone. As Reynolds had more of a diplomatic role, he was in need of entities which could help with the adherence to regulations/rulings devised by the Federation. Nathan Lowell had therefore formed an organization, called The Bad Company, which could be recommended by Reynolds as an organization to help with those matters. The goal of The Bad Company was to increase the influence and security of the Federation throughout all systems, and each client the Company helped presented an opportunity to do just that. Bad Company's head office was in an obscure corner of the Pan Galaxy.
In the pre-quel to this series, Gateway to the Universe, Bad Company is visualized as a possibility for many of the people who had come from Earth with Bethany Anne , the second time, when she rescued Michael, to work in/with when they were establishing their lives in the new galaxies.
