This group of six individuals (from an original ten) were guarding the temple, protecting their talisman, on Aibek Moon, one of the eleven Moons of Orn,

In the group was Gagai, the Leader, Koryss, his Second, Jendyg, Ammo, Naldrir, and Mennynad. All were faithful to their task but Jendyg, who said, “The mission is dead!”“The sooner you people realize that and accept that we’ve been forsaken, the sooner we can start letting people land here and get the hell off this rock.”

They had all been there for at least ten turns (10 yrs. each turn), and hadn't aged ti any extent. (Natural energy of the moon was preserving them.
Jendyg had lost faith, and when the time came ( when Giles and Arlene escaped back ontio the Scamp Princess in this book), he followed them, liberated and free, pledging his friendship forever.

In their battle to escape, he had been wounded, so when they all got back on the ship, they gave him a transfusion of nanocytes to help him heal. He had quite a violent reaction, and survived. There is no indication that he was changed in any way by this treatment, but, who knows ?

After the battle, the five remaining guardians retreat to their base, decide that their mission on their moon was finished, and that they would need to go back into the real world, and recapture the talisman, as their remaining life’s work. Gagai went on to afterlife, so he didn’t join them. Only four, now, as Jendyg had gone with ship. Ammo is the new leader.

We’re getting off this rock. We’re going to find the elders and we’re going to get our talisman back. No more waiting around forgotten. They chose us for a reason and we can deal. No other explanation as to how it would be done.
